Very late response here, but former Army UH-60 driver turned KC-135 driver. I’ve helped coach around 12 army bubbas through the process. It’s worth us having a conversation.

Super helpful info. I just finished up IP upgrade at Altus about 2 months ago and we had about 5-6 T-6 only bubbas going through initial qual sims while I was there. The general consensus was they had been screwed over by the syllabus design and were struggling to make it through initial qual.

The short answer is it shouldn’t. That said, I have seen highly competitive units ask Gold to Silver candidates to take the AFOQT just as an additional discriminator, but you would not need to attend UPT as the Air Force sees your T-6 time as equivalent.

All, sorry for the late reply here, and I’ll address the broader question in a post in the morning, but Chaos is correct. The Army does not recognize IERW as equivalent to UPT. If you’re selected you’ll receive your wings via Aeronautical Review Board, but they will have the stipulation: “Rotary Wing Only until Completion of UPT.”

We sure do! I fly BT-13s and do rides for some folks with one, then show our C-47s (I also fly 3 corporate ones for private owners that are the nicest, literally, in the world, and fly a couple of B-25s for museums.

Sounds crazy, but warbirds have been my hobby. Started with antique airplanes as a Lieutenant, and then got into liaison airplanes and then trainers and now transports and bombers. It’s a privilege to keep these airplanes flying.

That was the route I took. Completed command, started applying and made the jump. It’s a LONG, complicated and often times frustrating road, but it’s doable. I highly suggest setting up a general strategy session with me to discuss the best route forward! Best of luck!

It’s a great show. Try to get show center if you can, or if you know someone with a boat, I’ve heard it’s incredible to watch from the water.

Not flying wise at least. There may be some tenant non-flying units, but I don’t think that’s what you’re looking for. The closes flying units would be at March ARB in Riverside. I’d say that roughly 85% of both the C-17 and KC-135 squadrons live south of the base, with probably 35-40% living down in the San Diego area.

If you’re going this year, I’m absolutely jealous! The line up looks incredible. Pay for the pit pass. It’s expensive and given the fact that this year will be the last and only time you’ll ever have the chance to see it, you’d be absolutely remiss if you didn’t do it! I wish I could go!
