Good read. Thanks for sharing! Looks like some flight schools are actually developing programs to help people get ready for a “civil path to wings”.
Interesting times for sure.

Thanks for the insight @pwaterman . It’s definitely tough to keep up with all of the changes. Here’s an article I found not too long ago on some the new UPTisms.

Undergraduate Pilot Training 2.5 Is Now Just UPT After Being Fully Implemented
Maj. Gen. Clark Quinn, head of the 19th Air Force, said Undergraduate Pilot Training 2.5 is fully implemented but may be tweaked.

Finished up with UPT not too long ago. Current UPT environment seems like it is literally changing every day. At the moment, if you were to go to UPT being hired by a Guard/Res heavy unit you would likely do T-1 only track. There is a program at Vance and Columbus called XPW (Accelerated Path to Wings) and it’s a (I believe) 9 month, T-1…

Not to hijack your post, but I was told by some guard heavy members that they are thinking of doing away with T-6s for part time heavy units and going straight to T-1/sims since your airframe is immutable. I think many would be sad if that happened, but it does remove some of the “airsickness” risk, is what they mentioned. Wondering if anyone…

Has anyone had any experience with some of the new UPT tracks?
Are “heavies” (C-130, C-17, KC-135) just going through 9 months in the T-6 and the rest in the Simulator?
I would be interested to hear how this training is going.

Some more insights from a current UPT stud expanding on the UPT memo that was sent out:
“T-38 tracks will now start dropping heavies and FAIPS predominately (for active duty).
Also, delays are even felt here in the T-6. There will be a two-month gap between when I finish preflight and academics before I do my dollar ride (first flight in the…

Great information, terrible news for T-38 Studs. Hopefully this will clear quickly. I can’t imagine this will help the retention issues. I can see many leaving immediately to go the airlines once the 10-year commitment is up.

Super helpful info. I just finished up IP upgrade at Altus about 2 months ago and we had about 5-6 T-6 only bubbas going through initial qual sims while I was there. The general consensus was they had been screwed over by the syllabus design and were struggling to make it through initial qual.

So that letter is heavy, no doubt.
For context, this has happened before back in 2005-2010. What was true then appears to be true now:
– that the bad deals tend to fall hardest on the REGAF (active duty). Usually the ANG does a pretty good job of protecting it’s spots so the cuts come from allocations that REGAF pilots would have competed…

@Husky what are you referring to when you say “FAIP”?

One of the drawbacks of active duty is the lack of control. Luck and timing (along with individual performance, of course) play a huge part in what airplane you’ll fly.
According to this recent memo, active duty (not necessarily Guard/Reserve) fighter slots will be limited over the next year or two until the training pipeline logjam is cleared.
