What the heck is going on with Drones anyway?
Throwing this out there if anyone has questions about the current and future state of unmanned platforms for the AF. If you have any questions, please ask! I do not have a crystal ball, but can give an idea of why/how we got to where we are and where we are likely to go. Here are a couple points:
1. The MQ-9 is not going anywhere. Mainly because there is nothing to replace that capability anytime soon (and believe me, the AF has tried). If you sign up for MQ-9 now (18x AFSC), you are likely to be able to finish a 20 year career in the MQ-9.
2. Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) are coming, and are impressive. However, think of these less as flyable planes and more as munitions (i.e. a cruise missile than can land). Don’t expect a career path to fly these. 5th Gen fighters, tankers, command and control entities will work with/command them.
3. As I recently posted in another forum, small UAS driven by AI will be a big part of the future force, just no one is really sure what that will look like yet.
4. Space Force capabilities are getting tons of money and will be a massive player in the tactical game in the next few years. If you want to master a battlespace, Space Force is a safe bet.
