ANG Units Flying Multiple Aircraft; Fighters, Heavy, Helo
Hey pilots, I’m currently working on obtaining my fixed-wing private pilot’s license, and I have been seriously considering joining the ANG to serve and fly as many types of aircraft as possible, from fighters to heavies and helicopters. Is this a possibility within the ANG, or do pilots typically only fly one aircraft at their ANG unit? Will the unit I join allow me to fly additional aircraft if they have them in the unit, and does the flight training transfer over to other airframes within the ANG? From my research I’m sure I’ll get a few “it depends” comments, so I’m open to all insights.
My short story – I am 28, have a masters degree in civil engineering, have been flying paragliders and hang gliders for a while, recently started my PPL, and have fully caught the flying bug.
I have considered going through civilian flight training fully, but realized I will never be able to fly tactical aircraft by going that route, which is where my research brought me to the ANG. I have a strong work ethic and solid physical fitness.
I have a need to fly and I’m willing to do a lot to make that happen. Being able to serve by becoming a high level pilot as a career, is a change I am excited about and I can’t shake the bug. Ideally I would like to be located in a mountain region but understand pilot slots are tough to come by so I’m open to other locations if that opens opportunities to fly as many aircraft as possible.
