  • Congress Asks ICAO to Increase Pilot Retirement Age

    Hey Fellas,

I was reading the news the other day and saw that there has been some increased traction in Congress when it comes to raising the mandatory retirement age. It seems like the main room of the issue comes down to whether or not ICAO will support the move, since pilots would not be able to fly outside the NAS (and let’s be honest… the widebody guys are the old heads).

If ICAO agrees to research it, the three potential outcomes are raising the age, keeping the age the same, or LOWERING the age, which would be surprising. In addition, there could be additional certification requirements which might create some ripples.

What do y’all think about the move? Obviously it would affect hiring in the airlines which could definitely change a lot of Air Force plans for those of us considering a career in the airlines down the road.

This would have a huge impact on the Air Force. I would think it would solve a lot of the higher experience pilots jumping ship after their commitment for the airlines.

I feel like the other option is that guys would still jump ship but the regionals might be a thing again… I just don’t think life in the Air Force is good enough to stick around, even if the prospects on the outside aren’t as good. I think the AF always thinks money is the big thing preventing people from staying, but I think the biggest issue is the QoL associated with deployments, PCSing, added training, exercises, etc. We’ll see though!

The rumors when I’m at my airline job is that they want to push it from 65 to 67 so a pretty small change. There’s precedent for it, in 2007 the age went from 60 to 65.

While the overall effect won’t be huge. It’s generally considered a ‘bad deal’ for the young pilots because it causes a two year plateau when seniority doesn’t move much. But it’s good if you are one of those pilots AND wanted to keep flying.

    Husky’s spicy take:

This comes up now and again because pilots are the highest earning folks in a couple of congressional districts so those legislators care and most other legislators don’t care.

    Husky very spicy take

Give it up man! Go get a boat and retire. Better yet, save just a fraction of that wide-body captain pay and spend your retirement flying something you own.
