  • How to approach recommenders for application

Posted by Pipes on November 19, 2023 at 8:04 pm

Hi team, I was wondering what information to include when talking to recommenders. I have 3 so far, all at my Guard base.

One is an active duty Lt Col pilot at my base, but I hardly know him beyond a few interactions. I also have my Chief, who is asking questions about my volunteer time in the community and at the Wing, as well as about my grandfather who flew B-24’s in the Army Air Corps during WWII. I’ve worked full time for about 6 months after tech school, and just went off orders. So I am still new here. One will be from my supervisor who is a TSgt and used to be in Ops group.

I want to make sure I give them all the info they need to write great recommendations. I also don’t want the to all repeat the same information in their letters. Any tips on what to tell them or what to include? Thanks so much!

      Pipes,

To answer one of your follow-on questions, YES, a BogiDope membership would provide you all the support, networking and guidance on these type issues and so much more. Good luck as you pursue this life-changing career transition!????

I would recommend that you attempt to broaden the scope of your Letters of Recommendation. You should have letters from influencers in multiple phases of your life; academic, community, flight instruction, employment, etc. All from one is not ideal and doesn’t sell the total package that you are attempting to put on display in your application.

      Cheers,

      Snip

Thanks for your answer and perspective. I ended up asking another longtime member turned friend of an author community I belong to. It is a great idea to diversify.

I think I will upgrade to a paid membership. Especially with the Black Friday specials. The courses look very helpful

I think it would be a good idea to mention what units you are predominantly going to apply to. I would include my resume, an example recommendation letter(what you want it to say), and the turnaround time you need.

If you have any flight experience, your CFI or the DPE you used for your checkride(s) may be a good option to diversify from what you have now, and they can also attest to your flying ability.

ditto on snips reply. the idea of getting LORs from military personnel in your unit is the right idea, but make sure the person writing the letter for you has an understanding of who you are as a person. ultimately any kind of mentor like the list snip replied with works.

    Good Luck!
