Inter-service transfers (IST)
Posted by Husky on May 6, 2024 at 4:26 pmThinking of joining the Big BX club? Want that golf course membership? Trading gold wings for silver?
We get a ton of IST questions.
BL it is very common and a lot of units look at it super favorably.
I’ll try to compile some of our best data here.
Cheers!

I’m not a rated aviator/officer, however I am enlisted aircrew in the National Guard pursuing a UPT slot in the Guard or Reserves.
I did a squadron visit recently, and everyone was very chill. There were several pilots who were prior enlisted Marines or Army so I didn’t feel like I would be an outlier. I also think my aviation experience with maintenance and the scheduling helps me have realistic expectations for what the Air Guard will be like.
I’ll keep an eye out on this thread and when/if I get hired, I’ll try to help out anyone else if they have questions.

Currently a rated Navy Helo pilot on AD. I am in the process of applying for several rated positions within ANG / AFRC. It is an interesting process and seems to be unit dependent with how they handle you. I have T-6B experience but some of the units want me to go through a refresher training to ensure I am still proficient. One big tip for Navy / Marines looking to make the switch – it is very difficult to receive a conditional release (release from your T/M/S community), therefore; resigning your commission appears to be the only guaranteed method to make yourself eligible to apply to the ANG / AFRC. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions with my Gold to Silver transition. I will post updates here as I learn new information.

Can you then apply for UPT spot in ANGs 2 years before your Navy contract time is up as EWO on EA-18G? Like to fly F35A for a Guard unit through an open UPT slot. Also can you transition to Navy Reserve then apply to UPT?
