Malmstrom AFB Helo’s info request
Posted by MikeD on March 11, 2024 at 12:38 pmHello,
I’m Mike and this is my first discussion post, does anyone know if the new MH-139A helicopters that announced at Malmstrom AFB, MT are strictly active USAF positions? I’m at the beginning of the road for my piloting goals and wasn’t sure if that location and airframe could be an ANG or ARC prospect.
Thank you

I’m not an expert, and I’m not in that community but I was doing some digging last year. The Malmstrom unit is a temporary unit to bridge the gap until the AFRC FTU at Maxwell is fully operational.
I believe some day that unit will hire off the street to fly their MH-139s but as of last year speaking to the SQ/CC they were only interested in prior 11H instructor pilots. Even at that rate they’re still several years out.
Malmstrom is just active duty and from what I understand and it’s a temporary FTU anyways. AD helicopters look like a good deal, or of course try your hand at the handful of rescue units across the US.
good luck

Hey Mike,
For the time being that aircraft is strictly AD. That unit is currently and for the foreseeable future will be AD. They will also have units at FE Warren and Minot for that aircraft supposedly by 2030 that you will rotate between.
The schoolhouse for the 139 will be at Maxwell and at a minimum will have guard/reserve components if that is of interest to you. Since they are just standing up the unit down there though they are very limited on spots available and are doing very little flying currently.
