  • Questions to ask unit before enlisting?

Posted by Caasi on April 28, 2024 at 11:04 pm

Hey all! After countless time talking to a few friends of mine who are AF pilots or enlisted guardsmen, I have decided to pursue enlisting as a crew chief for the unit I want to fly for instead of AFROTC.

I am going to call the unit and ask for a time to go down there with my wife for a “tour” of the unit. But also to ask questions about life in that unit, what drill looks like there, what their mission is, deployments, and AGR positions.

I would love some advice on any specific questions I need to ask the recruiter. I’m not afraid to load them with a ton of questions. What questions do you guys recommend asking? And if there are any specific questions I should ask in regards to flying for that unit? I would really appreciate any advice and comments!

    Thanks all!!

    Caasi,

The recruiter will likely not be super transparent with the cons side of enlisted life, especially as a crew chief. It’s a hard job, but a fun one. I did it for 7 years as USAF active duty.

Here’s what I will also give as advice: Do NOT share your goals to fly with for your unit until you have given them a few good months of hard work. I have seen time and time again that aircraft maintenance will absolutely bury you under the hangar if they feel like you are “using” them as a way to get into ops. Give them a few good months of high performance then open up about your desire to fly. Once you have a good reputation, people will move mountains for you.

Hit me up if you have more questions/concerns about enlisted crew chief life.

Definitely what the situation is with resources: can the keep you on full time orders?

I’d also ask how many enlisted folks they’ve set to UPT in the last 10 years. And if you can meet them.
