  • The best way a college student can go about flying in the military

I’m currently a senior at Florida State University, working towards my private pilot license. I’ve always wanted to pursue a career in military aviation, but I’m unsure of the best path to take. If anyone has advice, I’d really appreciate it. I’ve looked into the Marine Corps program and the Air National Guard, and I’m specifically interested in finding a direct contract that could guarantee me a flying position—if such a thing exists.

Unfortunately there’s nothing that could guarantee anything. You never know what could get in your way that could cause something to change. I’m not too familiar with the Marine program, but have heard that if you sign your contract and later cannot become a pilot for whatever reason you’re on the hook for a job of their choice.

My advice to you is to go find Guard/Reserve units where you’d be interested flying at and start making those connections. Getting hired isn’t easy and can often take a long time. The more places you apply, the better.

Hey, I did the Marine Corps PLC program that you mentioned. They guarantee an opportunity to go to flight school once you graduate. It is difficult and they have you go through a 6 month Basic course, but they guarantee flight school afterwards. From there you compete for your platform, but honestly, everything we fly in the Marines is pretty cool. Let me know if you have any questions about the Marine programs.

@hayden-kimball There are lots of options available. Each has their pros and cons.

Ultimately, you have decide what’s best for you.

I personally recommend a position that has more flexibility such as the Guard or Air Force Reserve because life changes and these slots (although very competitive) give you more control over your life.

    Best of luck to you!

We would luv to help guide you on this journey!
