  • Tips for Networking with Pilots at Specific Units?

Posted by EricD on April 23, 2024 at 12:16 pm

    Hello everyone,

I’m trying to figure out the best way to network with pilots at specific units and could use some advice. Is reaching out on LinkedIn too forward, or is that generally okay? I’m really trying not to step on any toes or commit any faux pas while going through this process, but I also understand that making genuine connections can easily be the difference in having a legitimate chance at a UPT slot and being just another résumé in the stack. If you’ve got other ideas or platforms for making these connections, or any tips on how to approach this respectfully, I’d love to hear them.

    Thanks for the help!

Personally I would not reach out to pilots on LinkedIn or personal email. Find out when these units are hosting visits or when they are hiring and just go in as many times as you can. Bring a nice bottle or a nice gift and write your name on it so people remember you. Go to social events and just chat with as many people as you can. You can also try and coordinate visits via the hiring email that is on BogiDope.

I have reach out to pilots on LinkedIn before and it helped me get invited to base visits. Sometimes they will give you their phone numbers and you’ll be able to ask them any questions you want. It all depends on the person.

    Eric,

Wanted to reinvigorate this thread. We just completed a rushing the squadron webinar this evening, and I think all interested parties in this thread would benefit greatly from giving it a watch.

The bottom line is that I think creative ways to network or build a connection are fair game. You obviously have to weigh that by reading the room and making sure it doesn’t seem like you are annoying them or being overbearing. That said, outside-the-box thinking like this may get you an in at a squadron.

    Good luck!

I use to keep a notebook with sections for each Unit I had some contact with. I would write the date, the person I talked to, their phone number and email address and a couple of notes about our conversation and the next steps.

I think these days, there are so many different mediums to communicate that all are probably acceptable. Everything in moderation, though.

You want to seem interested and motivated, but not too pushy.

I do agree with bringing a gift, if and when you rush, but it doesn’t always have to be a bottle. I’ve been taking individually wrapped pralines to my last few training events as this is something that is popular in my town. Just make whatever you do be unique to you.

And always follow up with a “handwritten note”!

    Best of luck!
