    Howdy!

I just recently discovered this app and community and it seems to be the perfect destination for all things piloting regarding the military! I figured it would be best to direct my inquiries to this forum instead of searching aimlessly for information:

    My Background:

I’m currently an undergraduate student about to graduate this May (2024) with two bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science as a Magna Cum Laude with Presidential Honors.

I recently served an internship collaborating with the Air Force Research Lab, Space Force and NASA on nano-satellite research and design near Kirtland AFB in New Mexico. This internship reintroduced to me the idea of serving in the Air Force. During my time at university, I also served on the Texas A&M Chancellor’s Advisory Council, started multiple organizations for aerospace (AIAA, Satellite Lab) and served as Student Body Vice President.

I’ve always desired to become a pilot and serve my country but wanted to explore my opportunities as a civilian engineer alongside. I realize now that joining the AF Reserve or Air National Guard could allow me to pursue both paths and to serve in both capacities; hopefully becoming a productive civilian and military personnel.

    Inquiry:

Given my educational and extracurricular background, but lack of any piloting experience, would it still be possible to become a pilot and pursue the UPT program through the reserves or guard? To apply, would I already need to be commissioned into the reserves or guard? Are their suggestion you may have?

I am more than willing to meet online if this would be best! I frankly just do not want to waste anyone’s time if applying at this time with my current credentials is unsatisfactory or not feasible.

Thank you for your time and consideration!

    what’s up Red,

kudos on your academic achievements. to give it straight, it is definitely possible for you to be a guard pilot.

To apply for UPT, all you need is completion of the AFOQT and TBAS (definitely want to get the best scores possible), PPL (not required but most units do), and a bachelors degree which you will have soon.

to answer your second question, no you do not need to be commissioned. you can apply as an off the street applicant or enlisted.

In regards to suggestions, get your PPL first without intermittence; helps save mula. having your PPL can give you some GK for the required tests. Study your ass off for the tests. there are websites that help tutor (check the AFOQT/TBAS thread). When it comes time to apply, just make sure you stick out of the crowd in a good way. rush units, try to build connections. The Guard/ Reserves is a great place to be a pilot. There are some good article and threads you could read up on that might paint more of the picture for you. feel free to shoot more questions!

    Best of luck!
