• The Air Force has a lot of ways to become an aviator. This may be niche, but if anyone has questions on becoming an aviator (or cross training from one rated position to another) after receiving an active duty commission, just reach out.

I used the AF to pay for my eye surgery after commissioning in a non-rated career field. Then once I received my FC1 physical, I applied to the Undergraduate Flying Training board. It’s a great opportunity for becoming a pilot post commissioning. I have helped a few people go through the process and can try to provide any guidance on questions you may have.

      • @_Deez_ How did you end up flying the Growler? Sounds like an incredible opportunity. Thank you!

        • What up @C.J.!

Mainly timing and luck during drop night. Obviously do well in UPT and fighter qual, but you’ll be relying on just dumb luck as they drop normally 2 pilot slots for USAF every year.

          We just lllll

          • @_Deez_ Solid copy, if that is an opportunity I am given, I’ll definitely take it. Electronic Attack is a mission that is only going to be relied on more heavily in the coming years.

        • @_Deez_ Are you with the USAF growler squadron at Whidbey? We have had a long history with the EW mission since the onset of the Russian Sam systems in the 1950s.

          • @Beav Yea I’m out here with the USAF 390th ECS which embeds aircrew in different Navy VAQ squadrons. Actually, my Navy squadron has an Australian pep exchange officer. So I’ve seen the exchange you did from this side.

          • Is the age cutoff still relevant? Not sure how old you were by the time you got through FC1 and applied to the UFT board.

            • @Colin Currently for the UFT board, all rated positions other than RPA have an max age of 33. RPA has no age restriction.

There’s a pretty simple ETP process to route for those who will be beyond their 33d birthday. They provide ETP templates on the milBook site.

              • Is the ETP process viable if you are already “in” then, I assume? For a civilian on the outside, I have been informed that it is virtually impossible. As someone coming up on the age limit, this possibility is certainly intriguing.
