The guard as a backup.
The airlines are boom and bust. And having the ANG to fall back on can be an important safety net. I nearly got furloughed during COVID and was thankful for a paycheck. The latest news out of Spirit is a reminder.

The gun!
Believe it or not, the gun is still a really important part of a fighter jet’s loadout. Why? For each advancement to detect, there’s one to hide and so there always the chance for a visual engagement. And, maybe with the exception of the EX, you don’t have a ton of missiles.
