A Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies report released last month examined pilot shortages in 2024. The report found that the Air Force is approximately 1,850 pilots short of their overall goal and of those, 1,142 were fighter pilots.
We, as a community of warriors need to identify and address the root cause of fighter pilot shortages across the Combat Air Force (CAF). This problem is only going to get worse as time marches on due to mass retirements/separations and an inability to absorb more pilots due to jet production shortfalls.
BogiDope was created in part to address this very issue and we will continue to create innovative ways to bolster pilot retention and help more young people join the pilot ranks!

Air Force needs more fighter pilots for more airpower, report says
The number of fighter pilots is decreasing. But a Washington think tank has an idea for how to stem the tide and bring seasoned airmen back into the fold.

I think it always goes back to, everyone wants to become a fighter pilot, and not enough want to stay. I wonder though if there were more fighter slots in the guard and reserve. If pilots would be willing to stay instead of jump to the airlines.
