Hi everyone, I’m glad to be on this forum and learn from everyone/anyone. I am slowly transitioning out of the USMC and would like to join the ANG in the next 2 years. I have been told I don’t need to take the AFOQT by some ANG units but after my deployment, I shall still take it to be safe. Can someone explain what the TBAS and PCSM is? Is it equivalent to the ASTB that USMC/USN take for the Naval Aviation. I’m presuming it is. I’m just trying to get all necessary requirements for my application for the ANG units across the country – Kratos

      • Kratos, have you been in contact with a Unit or a USAF Guard/Reserve Recruiter? They can go through each step as you transition out of the USMC AD. My suggestion is to contact the State or Unit that you would like to live by and speak to their recruiter first.

        • Hi green, I have contacted several ANG units and some told me to take the AFOQT. I wanted to understand the TBAS/PCSM and what it entails; if its like the ASTB that we take for USMC and USN Aviation exam, then I wouldn’t mind taking those exams/tests as well. I’m in a deployed status so cant make calls till I get back home.

@Kratos The Test of basic aviation skills (TBAS) tests your “pilot aptitude” with a series of psychomotor challenges. There are some really good resources online to practice with. You are required to take the TBAS along with the AFOQT to get a Pilot Candidate Selection Method (PCSM) Score. They combine your performance on the TBAS, PILOT-AFOQT score, and your flight hours to creat your PCSM, which is basically your overall grade. Some units require you to have a certain minimum PCSM score since they get so many applications.

          Hope this helped!

          • AAhhh I see, I really appreciate the guidance on the matter. I definitely will get on using available resources to help me with the TBAS for sure, when I make it back home. Thanks @WAZ. Semper Fidelis
