First Saturday of College Football, one of my favorite times of year. So that brings to mind: Military Fly Overs post National Anthem. Did you know they are actually included in the DoD budget? This article describes how they work. Timing is key and communication with a ground liaison is the most important part. That ground liaison is at the event, and working the timing real time with the flex of National TV and all the commercials they do. It changes plus or minus depending on the TV schedule. There is a lot of work that goes into behind the scenes.
As someone that has gotten to do a couple, it is a great feeling. Flying over the stadium is a highlight. Being the ground liaison is less fun but you get to see and hear the crowd post National Anthem. Once done with the “hard stuff” of the fly over, you all get a ride from the local airport and get to hang out with some amazing people. I would count it a small highlight of flying for the Air Force/DOD.
If you get the chance, do one at your alma mater. It is one of those moments that you feel “rock star” status. It isn’t combat, but its still part of the mission. We need to share the tools and abilities gained to protect the Constitution and share that with the taxpayers that paid for those skills and abilities.
Enjoy some College Football today…and keep pursing those dreams.
