As an A-10 bubba, I have been told since the beginning of my career that the A-10 was “going away”, but this time seems different. The closure of the 25th Fighter Squadron in Korea will be the second active duty (AD) Fighter Squadron to divest their A-10s following ANG’s Fort Wayne last year. It seems this might actually be the end of an era when it comes to the world’s greatest CAS platform.
Strategically, how do you guys think this will affect PACOM’s mission? Personally, I see a lot of AD TSP’s in the future!
For the BogiDope community, although the divesture of the A-10 may seem unimportant for those of you interested in a fifth gen slot, these events are important to pay attention to. As A-10 pilots from both AD and the guard/reserve lose their airplanes from right below their feet, most of them will be seeking employment in the fifth gen communities. The speed in which we divest A-10s directly contributes to the backlog we experience at F-35 FTUs and the amount of open UPT slots guard and reserve units will have available based on the number of pilots who decide to retire with the A-10 or try and have a few more years romping through the skies in fighters. Food for thought.
For now, let us pay our respect for one of the greatest Fighter Squadrons and heritages I have ever been blessed to be a part of; The 25th Fighter Squadron.
