All recruiters, despite the commissioning source you are going through, have to attend the same training. The recruiting school house is in San Antonio and is quite in depth. If you ever have questions about this…or about what a recruiter can and should do for you, please reach out. Remember that in general 70% of applicants can’t meet some medical requirement of the military and are disqualified. At times, recruiters can get discouraged by this process, but my point is there are USUALLY waivers available if you don’t quit!
Recruiters have to log a ton of data as they chat with you. Part of your application has to do with background items that will lead to a background check for Security clearance. Some of it is identifying data is held in the database to get ahold of you and some of it is education information. Then there are the medical components as well.
Active Duty Air Force applications will have similar parts compared to ANG and USAFR. Alot of your data goes into a new cloud based system called USMIRS for the medical parts. The people that have access to this data are much smaller than your other data mentioned above. The USAF (or USMC or USN etc) databases interface with this system.
Medically you will have to go through the same MEPS medical clearance in your beginning steps. They will dive into your medical history…and one piece of advice, never omit anything! Waivers for a medical issue start here, and we have medical folks on our team @BogiDope that can help answer those questions if you have them.
After that there is a separate process/people for a Class I physical. The latter has to be approved by a Air Force Flight Surgeon. All Flight Surgeons have similar/identical training. The waiver process, regardless of commissioning source goes through the same office in San Antonio. The same team mentioned above can answer questions about medical issues.
Interesting fact, the MEPS computer system is visible to both USAF Active Duty and all ANG, and USAFR recruiters. If you apply for one service…they can all see your application in the computer system. It has the same paperwork for your medical clearances all tied to your SSN. So don’t think your recruiter doesn’t know if you apply to another branch or component. They can see it in MIRS computer system.
