ANG UPT Slots Cut
Posted by jacob-kilian on June 5, 2024 at 8:49 amHey all,
Wanted to pass this along from speaking to the SC ANG. I had heard some rumors about this over the last week, and this is the first official thing I’ve seen. I’m not sure how this affects the Reserves, but hopefully good news comes soon for everyone!

Leave it to Boeing to single-handedly inhibit the dreams of every future guard baby… Keep going everybody! It’s just a bump in the road.

This! Don’t let this stop anyone from applying, make them tell you no. Don’t self eliminate

Letting off the gas is the worst thing you can do. MAKE THEM TELL YOU NO (and then chase a waiver)!

Definitely agree. But it’s frustrating to think about what the next year or two looks like if you were preparing to apply to this board or next years. I’m curious to see how many people shift gears from ANG route and figure out another route.

I know for me, I have a deadline where I need to know where I’m going. I am concurrently pursuing a lay transfer to Naval Aviation or a conditional release to ANG, AF Reserves, SC NG, and Active Army to compete for a pilot slot. With guard numbers being cut, and Reserve slots being hard to come by at times, I may end up putting in for a Warrant Officer board if I cannot pick up a Reserves spot in time.

Woof. Yep, certainly not good news but let me offer some context.
1) It’s not just an ANG problem, expect that USAFA and ROTC will take cuts. Usually in the scenarios, it’s least bad for ANG.
2) It’s not just a Boeing problem. There was an engine contract that didn’t go well but is apparently improving. See below.
3) It is only a fighter problem
4) T-7 flying ops (initial cadre) begin in 25. See attached.
5) Other units have different hiring strategies and may not turn off their pipeline.
Expect the USAF to respond too late and too big. I bet it’s tight for 12 months and then the service realizes it overcorrected as T-38 fixes and T-7s come online.
So. Stay the course but maybe understand that all avenues will be more competitive. This will be most true with OTS (+ROTC and USFA); you’ll need to be ranked hiring that usual to get that T-38 track.

T-38 Talon engine repair woes could slow pilot training for months
The Air Force expects pilot training shortfalls through the end of the fiscal year, and that the J85 enterprise won’t fully recover until April 2024.

Got the email from my base that we’re not boarding either.

Foot stomping what some of the other coaches have said here… Don’t let this deter you from pursuing your dream! I think we have all seen ebbs and flows of pilot production, airframe cuts/delays, and general defense slowdowns… They come and go! Stay the course; greener pastures are ahead.

I agree with CHAOS! The Air Force always seems to be in “crisis mode” when it comes to training. My guess is in the near future, they won’t have enough people to send to UPT! ????
This is just another element that plays into the UPT Landscape. It doesn’t change any of the fundamentals of applying and preparing for your interview and ultimate job in a Guard or Reserve Unit.
I would actually argue that now may be the best time to “rush” units as some people may look at this as a hurdle and not bother visiting or applying.
Just my 2 cents.
