
James “Twinkie” Smith

Major Airline Pilot
James served over 21 years in his military career in both the US Marine Corps (USMC) and the Air National Guard (ANG), where he flew the F/A-18A-D Hornet, F/A-18E/F Superhornet, F-16A/B Viper, F-35B, and the F-15C Eagle. He attended Wake Forest University and gained his commission through the US Marine Corps’ Platoon Leaders Course (PLC) program. He deployed multiple times to both the West Pacific and a combat deployment to Al Asad AB, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He also served as a Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) Instructor Pilot and the 1v1 Air Combat Subject Matter Expert (SME). In 2013, he was selected by Headquarters Marine Corps (HQMC) to be a part of the initial cadre of USMC F-35B Instructor pilots during the F-35 program’s initial stand-up. In 2018, James transitioned out of the USMC and was hired by both Delta Air Lines and the ANG.
Among other billets, James has served as a Weapons Officer, Director of Operations, and Commanding Officer, always prioritizing and valuing the instructorship and mentorship of his pilots and troops. Over the last 4 years he has served on multiple ANG hiring boards bringing a significant familiarization and perspective on the process.
James currently resides in Florida with his wife of over 20 years and their two children, where they continue to indulge in their love of travel. He brings a passion for aviation and a genuine motivation to help others achieve their aviation and military goals.
