  • Active Army AH64 Pilot seeking to transition to Air Force fixed wing

Posted by AndrewP on August 6, 2023 at 1:49 pm

I have recently departed the active Army (like less than a week ago), with 9 years of service, and 850~ hours of rotary wing time, mostly in the AH64D/E. I am hoping to fly fixed wing for the Airforce Reserve or National guard, and am not picky about what or where I fly. My question is:

Does this happen? Are Army helicopter pilots at all able to transition to the Air Froce to fly? Would I be treated administratively exactly like a brand new 2LT coming from college, or would my situation be any different?

    Thanks for you time.

Hey! I am at UPT now and in my class is a Captain who was prior Army (flew blackhawks). He just finished up and is heading back to his guard unit.

I believe you could just reach out to any guard unit that’s hiring, interview, and if you get the slot, they would send you to UPT. Always worth a phone call!

Hey Andrew congrats on wrapping up your Army Active Duty time! I have no personal experience here with that transition but know someone who has done it. Although you have Army Wings in the ANG / Reserves your application will be for a UPT spot, not rated which gives you a ton of advantages. You won’t have to attend OTS since you are already an Officer so it’ll look something like getting your FC1 (Flight Physical) then heading to UPT and all the follow on training.

I’m an active duty Army Warrant Officer and AH-64 pilot with the same question but was considering Active Air Force. I’m 43 yrs old so I’m wondering if this going to be a factor given that the published age cutoff is 39 or 40. I know certain things can be waived so if anyone has info on this please let me know. Also, are age considerations different for guard/reserve? Thank you.

Hey man, I’m also an Apache pilot looking to transfer out. I still have 5.5 years on my ADSO, but hopefully I can find a new home as well. I’m looking to apply for an Air Natty Guard fighter wing unit.
