  • Active Duty – Navy OCS vs. Air Force OTS

    Hey folks,

Personally, I’m getting to the older end of the age curve for flying in the military and am openly considering my active duty options. I have a pretty healthy understanding of the Air Force side, and wanted to use this post as a landing page for those who may go through the same thing as I learn more about the Navy side or other options. I welcome any questions/comments and will update this post accordingly.

I personally would have gone to Navy OCS if I had the chance, I’m 32 so that option is no longer viable for me to take since I’m already at the age limit to be a pilot.

Getting in touch with a recruiter on the Air Force side was difficult and a waste of time. If you are serious and want to fly in the military; go Navy. The Air Force has too many applicants applying to OTS. DEFINITELY try applying to Air Force OTS first if you don’t get picked by Air Force, then full send to Navy OCS. That’s my two cent if I had to re do it over again.

Thanks for those insights! What makes you say try OTS first as opposed to OCS, any notable quality of life differences I should be aware of outside of the carrier stuff?

    Meech,

When I get the opportunity to talk with individuals I always recommend sitting down and building a roadmap of your goals. Most of the time there is an age in that roadmap, that you are at, where you start expanding options to get into the cockpit. I am unsure of what your are is but if you are talking about looking into the Navy my personal recommendation would be make your decision on what you’d be ok with doing and start exhausting those options immediately all at once. While trying for OTS, if interested and willing to, apply to OCS as well. This career field is getting more competitive by the day so maximize your opportunities.
