Going from Navy officer to ANG Pilot
Hey guys,
I’m an active duty Navy SEAL officer (O-3, 7yrs). I’ve been seriously considering applying to the Air National Guard squadrons with the intent to become a pilot. I’m only looking at fighter squadrons. My EOS is 26MAY27. That would put me at exactly 10 YoS and I would be 32 years old. I am currently tracking an 8 year limit on previous commissioned time but it is waiverable. Depending on getting selected and timeline to UPT, I may also need an age waiver. I have civilian flight experience (currently finishing PPL followed by instrument rating course), and several hundred hours piloting various SOF submersibles, amongst other general SOF experience.
Based on the folks here experienced with this process, is it feasible to assume I could still make this happen given my prior time in service and age at application? I do intend to stay in the navy if I’m unable to get picked up at an ANG squadron. I know a couple of guys in my community who left the teams to go ANG, but they were enlisted and I’m tracking that process is much different.
I plan to take the AFOQT and TBAS in late ’25 or early ’26, and apply for whatever fighter squadrons have openings during that time. I’ll likely submit my paperwork to leave the navy in early ’26, to give me enough time to process out and hopefully seamlessly transition from USN to ANG after my EOS.
Looking forward to any feedback or advice. Thanks to all in advance.
