Has anyone heard of or have experience with a Heavy UPT selectee getting a Fighter slot down the road, either by rushing units before training starts or simply performing well during UPT and staying in touch with local fighter units?

Although technically not impossible, extremely uncommon because the unit that hires you has to pursue a Training Line Number (TLN), from ANG/AFRES Headquarters to send you to a special T-38 course since you didn’t train via the fighter track in UPT. Usually fighter units have plenty of fighter pilots to pick from to fill their rated vacancies. So, yes, there is a path but very rare indeed.

I know a guy who was hired at a heavy squadron, performed well in T6s (2.1 syllabus) and ended up going 38s because a fighter unit student washed out of UPT, and they needed to fill the slot. He was top stick and a good dude and after an interview they hired him. Took some coordination between his flight commander, the fighter squadron, and his heavy squadron. Definitley a one off case rather than the norm. Lots of luck and timing. However, if you are looking to get hired by a heavy squadron just to use it as a path to UPT then jump ship to a fighter squadron, not a bro move.
