    Hi Everyone,

This is my first post, so I apologize if this is posted in the wrong place or if this question has been answered. I have two flight instructors who I think can write good letters of recommendation for myself, but they are both foreign nationals, and one has already expressed concern that a letter from them may hurt my application, rather then help it. While neither one has a military background, I wanted to see is this true? I understand that hiring boards are typically looking for details on leadership, how teachable you are, and good character, but I haven’t thought about how it looks if the letter is written by someone who is not a U.S. citizen until now.

Hey dude, I don’t think a letter of recommendation from a foreign national is an issue. It might even stand out in the crowd of applications. I was recently picked up by a hiring board and 2 of my 3 letters of recommendation were written by foreign nationals (one was a CFI with British military experience, and the other was a sports coach who happened to be from another country). As long as they are reputable and speak highly of your character and abilities, you’re good to go in my opinion. Only caveat might be if they’re from an adversarial country like China, Iran, or Russia, then maybe it’s best to pick someone else. Best of luck with everything!
