Current Timeline to UPT

  • Posted by Mussels on January 12, 2024 at 6:28 pm

    Hello Everyone!

    Newly commissioned and slotted for pilot training with Utah ANG. I will be swearing in this next Thursday. I’m looking for some straight info on the expected timeline from the swearing-in day to the start of UPT.

    Key points I’m trying to nail down:

    1. Typical wait time post-oath to UPT commencement?
    2. Specific factors in the Utah ANG that might speed up or delay this process?
    3. Recent experiences from Utah ANG members would be helpful, particularly regarding timeline and effective prep methods.

    Appreciate any solid info you can provide.

    Thanks.

    @Mussels,

    First off congratulations, it is no easy feat getting the call that you were hired by an ANG unit! Timeline in regards of hire to OTS or UPT does vary depending on unit. It also varies on if you are prior or non prior. I’ve seen my buddies who are prior Guard Crew Chiefs get to OTS in 11 months from the call.

    I’m an off the street Guard C-130 hire leaving for OTS soon. For me from oath to OTS has taken 9 months which includes a month delay due to a FC1 medical waiver.

    Things that can delay the process include medical waivers.

    I’ll also ante up that traditionally Guard orders are consecutive or very close so you will not sit casual at UPT waiting for a class date like your active duty counterparts. This to be said, it takes a while on the front end getting things squared away and getting orders, but once you start things move pretty quickly.

    Feel free to shoot me an email Riley@BogiDope.com if I can help out in any other way! Cheers!

    Congrats on commissioning man! Take all of what I’m about to say with a grain of salt, I’m sure the timelines depend from unit to unit but I swore into my unit in Oct 2023 and was told that the “earliest” UPT dates were Fall of 2024. Hopefully your unit can work you into a class sooner than that but that was the latest info on class dates I heard of.

    It all depends is the best answer. Even between hiring’s in the same unit. I went to pilot training with a Utah ANG dude, should ask around for the new guys at drill and see what their timeline was like.

    Congrats on the hire! Not sure what sort of timeline your unit gave you but most people that I know is around 2 years. My understanding is that the Air Force can’t send people to OTS fast enough. But as soon as you can get OTS out of the way they should PCS you to UPT within a few months. Things could be different in your experience but that has been the case for most people.

    @pwaterman ,

    There are a couple of factors that contribute to the UPT board slowdown. For one, there were a handful of boards over the last few months. Another factor (and the elephant in the room) is some delays in the UPT training pipeline, specifically some T-38 maintenance issues that are causing some units to delay hiring.

    All said, these things historically happen… They come and go, and units will be hiring again soon. Keep an eye out, and stay the course! Greener pastures and more opportunities will inevitability be here soon.
