Mindset- Rushing / Interviewing
Good Morning Everyone!
When you’re rushing or interviewing at guard/reserve units for highly coveted pilot slots, what makes you stand out from the other applicant?
I think one of the best things you can do is have a strong “why.”
I wanted to share a book that I feel really helped myself stand out in applying to ANG units and can open your insights to some of the qualities that driven candidates carry with them when applying to units.
Book: “Start With Why” by Simon Sinek.
We all know that during the visits to units or interview, you’ll be asked “Why the XX ANG? / Why the F-35/C-130? / Why do you want to be an Air Force Pilot?” There are many variations of these questions that are all asking “why?”
The difference between candidates that visit units and are only flies on the wall (don’t make the most of their visit) versus the ones that are making positive engagements with the squadron and securing interview and jobs are that it’s apparent that these individuals have a strong “why.” They show up, and they mean business. They convey that they have had this goal for years and they’re here to make it happen. (Note: they also know how to not be too overbearing/annoying during the process… temper your drive for the situation you’re in). These individuals convey that strong “why” in their interviews and their interviewers can easily see that this is what this individual wants to do with their life.
I hope this book or line of though will open up some ideas and help you all present your best self during the application process, and show that when units start looking at your “why” that you stand out.
Cheers,
Wayland
