Hello!
I’ve been trying to stay up to date on all the changes the Air Force is experiencing (as many of us are). I have a couple of questions in regard to Helo’s, if anyone can chime in. Correct me if I am wrong on anything I mention.
I’m assuming all pilot selects go to IPT, even rotary? Is it after IPT completion that you get sent to UHT? In an article I read on here, it mentioned to let your IP know early on that you want to track Helo’s, perform you’re best (of course), and hope your class has any slots available as they are hard to come by. I guess just let anyone and everyone in the AF know you want rotary as soon as you can? If anyone has gouge on AF helicopters, I would appreciate it.
I heard the Army is transitioning to R44s from Lakotas. Given the changes for AF flight training, there must be changes in AF rotary training that we don’t hear about.
Lastly, I heard from someone that if you get your MEL and 500 hours, you might be able to skip IPT?
Understandably, there will be lots of unknowns. My applications are already in, regardless!
Thank you!

Hey Austin,
Take all this with a grain of salt, as I’m a recent select who’s still figuring stuff out but is this in reference to Guard/Reserve or Active Duty? For Guard/Reserve you would know what airframe you’re flying, so there would be no need to track Helo. Instead there’s an IPT-R in Dothan for helicopters, and then it’s Rucker to fly the TH-1.
For active duty I believe Helo is considered a separate rated position (similar to ABM and CSO) and therefore you also don’t track, but I’m not 100% familiar with how it works for the specific platforms.

@IHC_Nole Yes, I should have specified that this was in regard to Active Duty. I didn’t know there was an IPT-R, so thank you.
