    Hey folks,

Wanted to bump this for a specific question/possibly provide some clarity for other folks.

I currently am nearsighted (myopic), with a -6.00 refraction in both eyes. With glasses/contacts I correct to 20/20. I have reviewed the both Medical Standards Directory (MSD) and Aerospace Medical Waiver Guide (AWMG) and am a bit confused on how to interpret them.

The MSD shows for FC1, you must be correctable to 20/20. I check that box. It additionally says “Any Meridian +2.00 to -3.00.” I’m confused about this verbiage, not being an eye doc. Does “meridian” in this case include myopia or hyperopia? Looking at the AMWG this also appears to be outside of the myopia waiver authority, leaving LASIK/PRK as the only option.

The follow up question is, would surgery be necessary prior to applying/rushing units or is there a way to fit it in somewhere post-selection/pre-FC1 or UPT?

    Thanks for any help

    Hey folks,

My name is Ray. I’m 26 years old living in the southeast, and I’m just in the beginning stages of this whole process, looking to apply for C-130 and C-17 units on the east coast.

My background is in wildland fire and emergency management. If we’re being candid, I always thought planes were cool but never had a serious interest in aviation or the military until working around pilots and various aviation resources throughout my career. Since then something clicked and here we are.

I’d like to thank SLAP and all the other admins here for making this website hum and helping people chase their dreams. I look forward working with this community more in the future!

Makes sense! Yeah, I went through all the old board results and it looks like there were around 20 unsponsored selects over the past calendar year. I’m not sure of total number of applicants to know the what that selection rate is but it feels pretty decent.

I’m not super picky on airframe, but my wife has asked me to try as best as possible to stay on the east coast. So it’s a weird spot where I would definitely take what I can get, and if unsponsored is an easier path, then so be it, but I want to avoid ending up somewhere undesirable. But also beggars can’t be choosers!

@luke.beer This is in line with what my recruiter has told me as well. Best of luck on the most board!

Have you started rushing units yet? I would love to hear about your experience unsponsored if you’ve started

I think this is right in line with what I expected and my course of action moving forward. I’m just about wrapped up with my application and will be putting in for individual units, but as things shake out with rush/interviews, unsponsored may be the good move later down the line
