It’s also a huge resource generator for the unit. An alert mission will usually add 10 pilots and dozens of maintainers.
Why might this matter to you? Well (all else being equal) units with an ACA mission can keep more folks full-time and may feel a bit busier day to day.

The C-17 is a crazy machine. The demo in person is amazing, the video doesn’t do it justice. But minute 6:00 when then land in like 18 ft and then throw it into reverse. Bonkers.

Alert (Airspace Contol Alert (ACA)) is a big part of the ANG mission. Being on status is something we take seriously but isn’t always as much fun as BFM over the ocean or a low-level through the mountains. This video ends up being mostly about CAP but has some interesting context, especially for DC.

South Dakota Guard UPT Application
Good luck again to all the folks applying to SD! An interesting fact is that the unit has an alert detachment in CA.. Here’s a great photo of one of their jets raging in the sierras. (credits in the link)

This is arguably the most consequential thing in the fighter force right now. New jets are parked which means either transitions get delayed or units end up without metal for a while.
It’s definitely a question to ask any unit you visit. What are they hearing about jet deliveries/next jet? Remember you are interviewing them too.

We certainly have always had plenty of volunteers to fly. The (USAF) pilot shortage you hear about sometimes is actually this super wonky programmatic problem.
Just one opinion. I think fighter pilot billets (the number of pilots we need) are stable for the next decade. But production will struggle a bit until the T-7a arrives in force.

No laser for now. We’ll have to keep working on that gun mech.

The Self-Protect High-Energy Laser Demonstrator, or SHiELD, was envisioned as a laser weapon mounted on fighter jets such as the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II that would neutralize incoming missiles.
