• My Dream

Since I was a kid my dream was to serve my country and fly jets in the USAF. Working a cushy engineering job its easy to get distracted by lifes bigger challenges. Now I want to prioritize my dream.

      • Prevailing Westerlie,

Great post! How far along are you in pursuing this dream?

        Things to think about:

        1. Study for the Air Force Officer’s Qualifying Test (AFOQT)

        2. Arrange to take a TBAS Test with an Air Force Recruiter.

        3. Obtain your Private Pilot’s License (PPL)

        4. Pick a Unit you want to “rush” ie, make a visit to them either at an approved “rush time” or on a UTA Weekend.

Let us know how we can help you on this journey!

        • Hey DJ, thanks for the reply!

I’m as far as I need to be to get hired. I just need to get noticed.

          1. AFOQT: 99 pilot, 65 CSO, 95 ABM, 47 AA, 32 verbal, 66 quant

          2. completed the TBAS unsure of score but resulted in a 96 PCSM

          3. completed PPL and have 88 hours in SEL

          4. at my age, 31 in April, I am interested in anything. Any squadron, any plane will be where my heart goes. I want to shoot my best shot and not get stuck in a rushee pack of 100 like I did at Tulsa a few years ago.

If there is anything I need help on its getting some letters of recommendation. I just don’t know anyone in the USAF. Also preparing my package before submission is priority. other than that general etiquette on how to present myself at rushes would be nice.

          • @Prevailing_Westerlie I would get 2-3 LOR. 1) One of your supervisors that can attest to your character and loyalty 2) someone you may have flown with or met while working on your PPL 3) one of your peers that knows you well and would speak highly of your trustworthiness and dedication.

As for “getting noticed”, consider Units in airframe transition as they may be looking for more pilots due to larger than normal attrition..C-130J…F-35…KC-46, etc.

Also, I would look at Units that maybe “out of the way” as they are more interested in people willing to live and work in that location because its hard to hire people who will stay for long periods of time.

Let me know if this helps.

            D.J.

          • If you are serious about becoming an aviator. You should try looking into the Navy too. I heard if you score 7/7/7 on the ASTB, you could be automatically selected to become a pilot. It might be something to look into. Im currently 32 I wished I known this before 🤣
