        BD Crew,

Here is a question I have seen a lot from our candidates who are either building civilian time to improve PCSM scores, or from UPT selects who are still building civilian flying experience: “Should I continue to get ratings like Instrument, Multi, CFI etc? Is is going to matter to the USAF?” As with all good questions, the answer will depend on your circumstances and goals. Flight training is expensive, and you wan to make it count. Short answer: ratings will never hurt your application chances. But civilian ratings have also been shown to be a bit of a wash in UPT. But usually doesn’t hurt. But one thing that most people don’t know is that the USAF will essentially pay for your commercial, multi-engine, instrument, and instructor FAA certificates. Through the Military Competency rules, the FAA has established that military pilots with the proper paperwork and knowledge test can directly translate to civilian ratings. This is a great option to consider when weighing exactly how you want to structure your civilian flying prior to UPT. The site below has a great explainantion of what USAF training will translate to which FAA rating.
