        The Mk1 MOD 1 Eyeball

        BD fam,

Thought this was a great tidbit of tactical aviation knowledge and history. For eons, fighter pilots have wondered “How can I make my eyeballs more better?”. The answer is targeting pods (giant cameras), and helmet mounted displays. These things need to be aligned each flight to align with the pilot that day. Fighters utilize the HUD as the frame of reference, but what if you don’t have a HUD (F-35s not included)? You just get a rifle optic to act as a mini-HUD. The OA-1K (and previously the AC-130W) use EOTech rifle optics to get the job done Great use of off the shelf tech by the designers.

As an interesting aside, the old F-15 fitted with a rifle scope (for long range visual ID) included for fun.

OA-1K Skyraider II Has Off-The-Shelf Rifle Sight Mounted In Its Cockpit

EOTech holographic sights are mounted on the special operations light attack plane's dash for a reason you might not expect.
