In keeping with the Skyraider theme, here is some legendary aviation lore.
The original Skyraider, nicknamed the “Spad”, was born as a Navy torpedo bomber that never made it to the fight in WWII. It saw combat in Korea, then in the early days of Vietnam. But in the new jet age, the A-1 had to find a new role other than a dedicated strike aircraft. The role it found was rescue. Particularly rescue escort (RESCORT) of Jolly Green helicopters. This mission evolved into the Sandy (rescue mission pilot) role that is still held aloft by modern A-10 squadrons.
This important role has an an uncertain future with the limited timeline of the A-10. There have been other experiments with fast jets picking up the Sandy role, but have never panned out. Is the OA-1K the answer to the Sandy question?
