As everyone here is aspiring or already a professional aviator of some sort, keeping diligent flight records is essential. BogiDope has some great guidance on logbook conversion from military to civilian time. There are also multiple companies that will help you out with the conversion. But what about the stories? The things that happen during those hours that further your development as a pilot?
Too late in my career I was given some great advice: keep a separate flying journal. Use it to document things that happened, things you learned, or memories you want to keep. This will be a HUGE asset during interview time when you inevitably get asked: “Tell me about a time…” Keeping it separate from your logbook affords you the opportunity to keep it looking professional, while keeping a hopper full of great flying anecdotes.
