Deployments are always a hot topic when discussing your career in the military. There are many different lengths of anywhere from 3months to 18months. Don’t worry in the Guard and Reserve right now the cycle is for a 3 month deployment. There are talks of adjusting to model closer to AD but we’ll see what happens. Here is an article that talks about what goes into the deployment cycles and potentially why it doesn’t fit all units. Worth a read as if you get selected you WILL deploy.

Kendall: ‘One Size Doesn't Fit All’ for Deployment Cycles
Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall and Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force David A. Flosi discussed deployment cycles and units of action.

Solid read. The Navy is battling a similar issue, but instead of deploying individual units, we are often times forced to deploy individual ships due to a back-log of maintenance on other ships in theater. Specifically in forward deployed squadrons like Japan and Rota, it forces operators and sailors to be “on-call” for deployments, sometimes deploying with as little as 72-hour notice.

A lot of changes coming to the deployment schedules as well. I know on the Active Duty (AD) side, Air Force Personnel Center (AFPC) is aligning Vulnerable to Move List (VML) with Air Force Generation (AFFORGEN) cycles. Big words I know, but what it means in layman’s terms is that AD is trying to time member’s PCS moves with deployments so that less people have to interrupt their deployments in order to move. It is an attempt to have true uninterrupted deployment cycles for entire squadrons. Ultimately, I think this shuffle of AD deployments will eventually result in ANG/AFRC picking up the pieces with either longer deployments or more frequent deployments. All part of Total Force Integration.
