Waivers for sleep apnea
Hi,
I was diagnosed with Mild Obstructive Sleep Apnea about 4 years ago due to a broken nose that was clogging up my nasal passages. I had surgery to re-open my nasal passages, and I now have minimal symptoms, sleep much better, and really have no breathing problems to speak of. My waiver was rejected, but they included the following paragraph:
“At this time, your condition does not meet our waiver criteria. However, if your condition were to improve, as evidenced by clinical documentation of controlled symptoms to include a current sleep study. As well as a current PCP evaluation to include a neuro evaluation, another request can be submitted for waiver review. Waiver resubmission must contain current (within 3 months of submission) clinical encounter notes from your treating provider (not just a memo from the provider) documenting current status for the condition.”I am looking into the waiver guide here: chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://www.afrl.af.mil/Portals/90/Documents/711/USAFSAM/Air%20Force%20Waiver%20Guide%20Compendium.pdf?ver=sPppe0TK2en36aEgWCncMg%3D%3DI
It seems to say that I will need to get an in-lab sleep study. Does anyone know if they will accept a home sleep test (commonly administered using the WatchPat One device), or if I will need to get an appointment to do the sleep study at a hospital? I ask because the home sleep tests are much cheaper, and I am not sure if my insurance will cover in-lab testing. I also don’t want to pay for a home sleep test only to have it be rejected and then need to pay for an in-lab study on top of that.
Additionally, if I do take the test and it shows that my sleep events are still over the threshold, is there any way forward? Can you get a waiver for sleep apnea with a PAP device? They mention PAP devices in the waiver guide, but the section seems mostly geared towards people who are currently flying and need a renewal waiver, not people who are submitting an initial application.Appreciate any advice and good luck to everyone with upcoming applications!
