A lot of applicants treat Navy OCS like a foggy backup plan.
“Maybe I’ll go Navy if the Guard thing doesn’t work.”
Okay. Maybe. But understand the deal first.
Navy OCS aviation is not “join the Navy, go to OCS, and then hope someone lets you compete for pilot.” You are applying for a specific aviation path before you show up. If selected as a Student Naval Aviator or Student Naval Flight Officer candidate, you arrive at OCS with that pilot slot attached to your name
That is the good news.
The tradeoff is control.
In the Guard or Reserve, you can interview with a specific unit, in a specific location, flying a specific aircraft. That is the magic of the Guard path. It is also why the process is so competitive and so relationship-driven.
Navy OCS gives you a more structured active-duty aviation accession path, but you are buying into the needs of the Navy. You do not get to hand-pick your aircraft, your coast, your timing, or your future squadron culture.
That is not bad. It is just different.
For the right applicant—sharp, medically clean, strong ASTB, physically ready, and genuinely interested in naval service—it can be an outstanding path.
But do not treat it like a loophole.
You are not applying for an airplane.
But one of the best things about the department of Navy is the percentage of pilots that track fighters is generally higher than the USAF

Cool writeup about Apaches and Seahawks getting after fast boats out of Iran. Definitely a problem set normally attributed to fighters, these helicopters are ideally suited for things like fast attack craft and drones. A great example of how things thought "too slow for modern combat" are seeing new life in current conflicts.

Of late, guided rockets have made strafe seem like a throwback, but I, for one, love to see the chainsaw making a comeback
Got to fly with some of these ‘echos’ in the stack last week—a really impressive upgrade. The -64D was a great attack platform, and they really did a great job of integrating sensors and datalinks into the upgrade.
Less of a discussion and more informational... All rotary wing U.S. Army Reserve Units are being disbanded. Thus, for rotary wing Army Aviation, only guard and active duty are options. I am still waiting on a full confirmation regarding USAR fix wing units but as of now, I believe they are still operational.
