  • No UPT hiring positions?

Posted by SkyDaddy on July 1, 2024 at 5:51 pm

Just a few months ago MilRecruiter and BogiDope had a large variety of UPT fighter positions open, but looking lately there is not a single slot open.

    a few questions:

Is this is normal and I just missed all the summer hiring?

When is the next hiring season?

Should I send my application to the units anyway, or wait until they repost UPT slots?

This is specific to fighters only and guard slots.

Florida, Hawaii, South Dakota, California, Oregon, Louisiana, and New Jersey have all had UPT hiring events in the past few months. I’ve heard Idaho may have one later this Summer. Often there’s a late Spring / early Summer hiring window followed by an Autumn / Winter window. There’s no predictable schedule for these things though. Especially now, due to UPT delays for fighter candidates caused by T-38 / T-7 issues. Just keep an eye out, don’t be afraid to reach out to units and ask for more info.

      good info!

looks like I barely missed summer hiring, bummer. Silver lining, I was getting worried that training was being universally shut down due to the trainer issues. a few units got back to me and said they’re suspending UPT for the time until several issues get resolved..

Just out of curiosity, was Hawaii published on Mil recruiter?

Hawaii was not published on Milrecruiter; I found out about the opportunity by emailing their recruitment office a few months before the hiring window opened

I’ll just jump on this thread and ask; has anyone in training for the rescue HH-60’s seen or heard of major delays in the whiskey training pipeline?

Awesome thread here guys! @blueingreen you nailed it when it comes to trying to predict these things. There’s no true formula… Keep grinding and reaching out to units regularly. There are definitely units (to include Hawaii) that often keep there hiring boards close to the vest.

The thought process from the unit perspective is that if you want the job bad enough you will put in the effort to find out about the board. Don’t miss opportunities by leaving stones unturned!

    All:

I reached out to every squadron that has a POC on MilRecruiter, whether it was email, phone number, or both.

    Here’s my experience.

To start, most squadrons have out of date contact information on MilRecruiter. The ones who do have information posted have said that the best way to keep an eye out for recruiting posts is to keep an eye on the squadron pages (af.mil type)

many squadrons right now are not hiring for a few reasons.. The most common is the Air Force is switching many airframes and they won’t have UPT slots open until the unit has a training program established AFTER the transition period.

The units that are maintaining their current airframes are having issues getting people through the UPT pipeline due to active duty soaking up school slots. Some UPT candidates have been selected and have been waiting to go to school for over 12 months.

that being said, every recruiter that I’ve talked to has said persistence is key right now. Slots WILL open, there’s just no forecasting when. Do not get discouraged! If this is what you want to do, make it happen.

I’d add T-38 availability as a factor as well. But the question what do you do?

I’m going to migrate that answer to a new thread. Look for it tonight.

So the SC ANG email canceling a UPT board created a ton of concern. But it now seems like more of the exception than the rule. Just look at DC who managed to get an extra UPT (F-16) slot.

I’m seeing pretty robust hiring and bogidopers doing really well. Portland, AZ, DC, and AL all went to Bogidopers and lots of folks got invites to fighter boards. Even more action on the OTS and big wing side.

A little more competitive in the short term – sure. But definitely something you can handle, we’ll get you there!

According to the Bogidope Job Board, looks like a number of Units will be hiring in the next 2-8 months. The Fall is a great time to plan a visit to a Unit if possible. The First Quarter of the Fiscal Year is typically slow for most Squadrons as they are usually operating under a Continuing Resolution for funding. I have found, though that the beginning of the year tends to have a lot of “action” with UPT Boards as they are starting to assemble for the early spring through the summer.

Now is the time to start building your application and interview “skills” to be ready for that “$5M plus” job interview (the amount of $$$ you will make over your career and into retirement)!

Let us know how we can help!
