A Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies report released last month examined pilot shortages in 2024. The report found that the Air Force is approximately 1,850 pilots short of their overall goal and of those, 1,142 were fighter pilots.

I think it always goes back to, everyone wants to become a fighter pilot, and not enough want to stay. I wonder though if there were more fighter slots in the guard and reserve. If pilots would be willing to stay instead of jump to the airlines.

As an A-10 bubba, I have been told since the beginning of my career that the A-10 was “going away”, but this time seems different. The closure of the 25th Fighter Squadron in Korea will be the second active duty (AD) Fighter Squadron to divest their A-10s following ANG’s Fort Wayne last year. It seems this might actually be the end of an era…
