You would be protected under USERRA, which allows you to take military leave for up to five years to complete your training and seasoning orders with the squadron. The regional contract is meant to prevent you from leaving for another regional or major airline, not from pursuing a military opportunity. I attached a link so you can do your own research.

From what I’ve gathered, you need to complete the AFOQT and TBAS, then apply to UPT to compete for fixed-wing slots. You would only apply as rated if you were trying to go to an Air Force rotary wing unit. If you find other information please let me know.
