What does it mean to be interviewing the unit?

A rush is not just them deciding whether they want you -you are deciding whether you want them. No really. You may become part of this team for two decades - you want to get it right

Some units are deeply local and mission-oriented. Lots of full-timers - the bar is full of people debating tactics and fighting their wristwatches

Other units are the classic Guard-airline mix: commuters, part-timers, many people balancing seniority, trips, family, and drill. You may be more likely to hear a contract debate than debating the nuances of HAVE QUICK.

Neither is wrong. But they are different lives.

Smart questions to understand that vibe help in a few ways

First, you can find your tribe. You are not applying for a job; you are choosing people you may spend decades with.

Second, you can adjust your presentation. Know what they value and show them how you fit.

Third, you crush the rush. Mature candidates ask thoughtful questions because they are evaluating the commitment seriously.

So what are these questions? Stay tuned; we’ll hit that next.

The 199th F-22, 203rd KC-135, and 204th C-17 are running a combined board. One interview process. Three very different missions. Paradise, apparently, comes with a little bit of a weird interview

For fighter-only applicants, do not let the broad interview throw you. The questions may not feel especially fighter-specific because they are trying to assess whether you fit the Hawaii Guard ecosystem—not whether you can recite BFM theory. Be clear on why the 199th, why Hawaii, and why you are a long-term fit beyond “Raptors are sick.”

For lift applicants, the opposite trap: do not show up sounding like you are mostly applying for beach access. They have seen that movie. Talk mission, contribution, family durability, deployability, and why you will still be committed after island fever shows up.

It is an expensive rush and they tend to hire local. That does not mean do not try. It means make a deliberate attempt.

As with any new airframe there will always be issues, kinks, and small discrepancies that need to get wrung out. I’m not aerospace engineer but if you look at the history of all platforms, not one has come into service squeaky clean. Unfortunately with budget constraints and already massive issues in UPT/IPT this hits another potential black eye. Hopefully they can get back on track.

As US assets start returning stateside this might be the signal that tensions are cooling off.

The Boeing “Ghost” CCA is currently flying along side our manned counterparts in an exercise this week. Not sure how fast something like this will be fielded but I’m willing to bet members of BogiDope selected will be seeing these in their careers.

As always the funding request for the military and DOW is always a hot topic among the general public but also inside the services about where funds should go. One thing that sets us apart from other counties is our training capabilities and flying hours our pilots annually receive. Unfortunately the folks in Washington made some cuts where it hurts.
