BD crew, SIC posted a few days ago about the announcement that the Makos in Florida will eventually upgrade to the F-35. That list of ANG/AFRC 5th generation units keeps growing and got me curious: what do most aspiring fighter pilots actually want to fly these days?
So, in an ideal world, would you choose a career in 4th/4+ gen (F-15, F-16, F-15EX), or 5th gen (F-22, F-35)?

For the experienced civilian aviators in the community exploring Air Force options, have you heard about the Civil Path to Wings (CPW) program?
This program was introduced a few years ago, but rumor has it they're still taking applicants! FAA- highly qualified pilots can compete for selection to an accelerated Air Force pilot training pipeline leading to Mobility, Special Operations (fixed wing), or Reconnaissance aircraft opportunities.
Selected candidates validate their skills through written, oral, and simulator evaluations. They can obtain Air Force wings in as little as 3 months through a T-1 Jayhawk sim-only syllabus before heading off to their assigned aircraft.

Looks like all you Florida boys may have your dreams come true. The 93 Fighter Squadron has been chosen to get F-35s to replace their aging F-16 fleet with the transition taking place around 2034. What better place to fly F-35s than Miami Beach? ..and don’t say The Boxing Gators in Jacksonville, sorry SMAX and SLAP!

This is pretty cool. Looks like the heavies are breaking into the strike game! Palletized cruise missiles could mean a big upgrade in the ability to mass standoff weapons. Also, it opens up a new mission set to BogiDopers trying to become airlift pilots.
