107th Selfridge Fighter Squadron Michigan
Hello all,
I am 28 and currently in a career transition from law enforcement to aviation. I am working on finishing my PPL at the moment. My goal is to apply to an ANG fighter position next year (2027). If anybody on here is familiar with the 107th, I would love to chat.
I am also open to any career-transition advice. My main concern at the moment is my age. Being 29 at the time of application next year, I worry I might be a bit too old for a fighter unit. I understand each ANG unit differs on what they want for age. I was curious if anybody here had any information specifically pertaining to the 107th.

As far as age- I know we all say age is just a number - and for many of us it is. The only actual requirement you need to meet is prior to age 33, which I'm sure you are tracking. I actually used to work with a reservist who was hired at age 31, and by the time he got back to the unit that hired him, he was 34, but he still competes like a 25 year old. This is the key in my opinion - compete. Show the unit through your actions and application, that you aren't worried about your age- so why should they? Physical fitness, intellectual aptitude and stamina - show them you compete. Have the best scores, the best stories, and hang out with bros in the bar.
I don't have any specific data for the Selfridge unit, but I will try to reach out to some bros and see if I can find out if they are weary of a particular age. But I have to ask, if they say yes- does that mean you won't apply? It wouldn't stop me - I hope it doesn't stop you. You never know what is going to happen in that board. Maybe everyone is around your same age that applies. Maybe you are the best candidate and the individuals who are younger than you just need a bit more experience before they are picked up? Wouldn't you always wonder what if?
Don't let yourself wonder that for the rest of your life. My advice is to apply and see what happens.
