AD Stud looking to go ANG, is it possible?
Hello everyone, I'm currently on casual at UPT for Active Duty but have been eying the possibility of going guard prior to starting T-6s. Does anyone know if this is even possible? Has anyone ever done this?
Aiden, sounds like probably not. What is your commissioning source? Like myself, you have found out about the green grass of the Guard just a bit late. Welcome to AD! It has it's own distinct set of advantages. Hit me up if you want to chat about them. Here are some ways to keep the Guard doors open:
1.) Excel at UPT so you can choose you preferred airframe. Remember: fighter qualification opens up all of the ANG units later
2.) Enjoy AD; its awesome
3.) Keep in touch with your ANG classmates as you progress.
4.) Look for TFI (Total Force Integration) assignments. AD sends folks to season with ANG units on regular PCS rotations.

Hey Aiden! I agree with Smack-Meier but wanted to provide an extra perspective as someone who has taken an unusual path to another unusual path (I did ROTC direct to Reserves and am fresh out of helicopter training).
As far as I’m aware, there’s no established way of doing what you’re asking about. With that said, if it’s something you want bad enough and have a decent amount of time before starting, it may be worth it to you to keep pushing for just a little bit more. To be clear, I wouldn’t recommend this effort be with the expectation of it working out, but more along the lines of digging a little further to “make them tell you no” since I’ve seen stranger things happen (to include West Point->Army helicopter training->ANG heavies).
As Smack mentioned, there’s plenty of ways to work towards the Guard/Reserve life during your AD time. If you’re starting soon and want to lock in on training, those are all great things to keep in mind.
