Resume Building/Next Steps
Hey everyone,
I'm probably at risk of asking a question that has already been answered but here it goes.
I'm looking to brainstorm ideas on how I can better network for UPT applications. I do not have a mentor that could help get my foot in the door to meet and greet/rush squadrons, I have been cold calling and sending emails to recruiters for the wing but the majority of the time I hear nothing back. Are there other ways to tackle this that I'm not considering? I feel that my application is solid but I seem to be getting no traction and I feel like I'm missing something.
JKrue Reaching out to listed wing recruiters is very hit or miss. Understand that the majority of recruiters within the state are targeting enlisted members, and it is not uncommon for a state to only have ONE recruiter in charge of officer accessions.
If you are going to reach out to a recruiter, try asking the question, "can you please put me in touch with the recruiter in charge of officer accessions because I am interested in applying for an officer position (or the upcoming UPT hiring board)." These recruiters rarely know what's going on in the flying squadrons.
A better bet may be to find the POC name or email listed with a hiring announcement. That POC is almost always in the flying squadron and will be able to give you better data. To get your feet wet, I'd target units in your area or that are on your dream list. Try getting the POC's attention by saying you will be in the area and would love for the opportunity to stop by at their convenience. I realize this is all easier said than done!
Another idea, as a Pro member, is to send me your resume and cover letter (wyatt@bogidope.com). With the new release of our ACE score and new dashboard, we are Beta Testing a program where coaches will grade your Resume and Cover Letter. It's FREE for this first round and a great way to get some feedback on what coaches who have sat on hiring boards think about your resume/cover letter.
Lastly, recommend hopping into the Coaching Office Hour on September 17th. You'll have a coach on the call who can answer your questions and provide some tips to strengthen your application packet. Bottomline, we are excited for you to use all resources available to your membership! We are happy to coach in a 1-on-1 setting or talk you through the options available throughout the BogiDope website.
Cheers,
Smax
Constant networking is key! Make a list of people you may know in an area that the Guard or Reserve Unit you are targeting is in. Call them and see if they may know some one. It may not be a direct contact, but it should get you close.
Also, there are members in our Bogidope community who may have contacts.
Additionally, if you have access to the Bogidope trip reports, sometimes people put POC’s in the text that they talked to.
Bottom Line…look every where!!!
