Rushing
Rush is expensive.
Not just money expensive. Time expensive. Energy expensive. Training expensive.
Every weekend on the road is a weekend you are not flying, studying, working, resting, or being a normal human. So if you are going to rush, have a strategy.
Here is the model:
Deliberate targets and dynamic targets.
Deliberate targets are the units you are intentionally cultivating. This is especially useful on the lift side.
Lift units usually want more relationship. They are hiring a pilot, yes. But they are also hiring a crew member, a squadron member, a deployment buddy, and someone who may be around for decades.
Fit matters.
So if you are chasing lift units, do not try to rush the whole country. Pick three deliberate targets.
Three units you actually want.
Three units where you could realistically live.
Three units you can visit without going broke.
Then get their drill schedule and build a cadence.
One visit per quarter per unit.
If you lived in DC, maybe it looks like this:
January: Andrews KC-135s.
February: West Virginia C-17s.
March: New Jersey KC-X.
April: Andrews again.
May: West Virginia again.
June: New Jersey again.
Now you are visiting one squadron a month. That is sustainable. You are becoming familiar. You are showing real interest. You are not suffocating them.
That is deliberate targeting.
Dynamic targeting is different.
Dynamic targets are opportunities you seize when they appear. A unit drops an announcement. You get invited to a small-batch rush. You happen to be near a squadron during drill weekend. A mission you had not considered suddenly makes sense.
Almost all fighter units are dynamic targets. Why?
Fighter units have a volume problem. A fighter board might see 200–400 applications. They cannot host every interested person, and open rushes are often uncommon or low signal.
for all dynamic targets
Apply.
Get invited.
Rush by invitation.
Interview .
That does not mean fit is irrelevant. It means your application usually has to earn the invite before you get a chance to build fit in person.
So the strategy is simple.
Deliberately cultivate a few lift targets. Dynamically seize high-quality opportunities everywhere else.
Don’t spend money because you are nervous.
