Not to hijack your post, but I was told by some guard heavy members that they are thinking of doing away with T-6s for part time heavy units and going straight to T-1/sims since your airframe is immutable. I think many would be sad if that happened, but it does remove some of the “airsickness” risk, is what they mentioned. Wondering if anyone…

Letter of recommendation question: When uploading LoRs to apply to a squadron, is it proper to change the date to align with the timeframe in which you are applying, or do you leave the date as it was originally written? I have some LoRs with dates back to 2023, and wasn’t sure if the hiring board would think it’s “outdated”.

@Allen this is a great question. I would seek to get new ones at least once per year, but it depends on who it is and their background. Will they update it for you?

Has anyone taken the AFOQT @ an ROTC Detachment?
If so, how do you schedule the test?

@D.J. I had initially scheduled mine at a local ROTC detachment, but ended up going with a Pearson Vue testing center instead. All I did was look up the test coordinator for that school’s ROTC program (Cornell in my case) and I called them to schedule an appointment. The reason I didn’t end up taking it at the ROTC detachment was because they… Read more

Semi related but do you already have to be in OTS or have a packet submitted to be able to register for the exam? Still in very early stages so just curious thanks y’all

Has anyone had any experience with some of the new UPT tracks?
Are “heavies” (C-130, C-17, KC-135) just going through 9 months in the T-6 and the rest in the Simulator?
I would be interested to hear how this training is going.

The best way a college student can go about flying in the military
@hayden-kimball There are lots of options available. Each has their pros and cons.
Ultimately, you have decide what’s best for you.
I personally recommend a position that has more flexibility such as the Guard or Air Force Reserve because life changes and these slots (although very competitive) give you more control over your life.
Best of luck to…

The best way a college student can go about flying in the military
Hey, I did the Marine Corps PLC program that you mentioned. They guarantee an opportunity to go to flight school once you graduate. It is difficult and they have you go through a 6 month Basic course, but they guarantee flight school afterwards. From there you compete for your platform, but honestly, everything we fly in the Marines is…

Unfortunately there’s nothing that could guarantee anything. You never know what could get in your way that could cause something to change. I’m not too familiar with the Marine program, but have heard that if you sign your contract and later cannot become a pilot for whatever reason you’re on the hook for a job of their choice.
My advice to…

Some more insights from a current UPT stud expanding on the UPT memo that was sent out:
“T-38 tracks will now start dropping heavies and FAIPS predominately (for active duty).
Also, delays are even felt here in the T-6. There will be a two-month gap between when I finish preflight and academics before I do my dollar ride (first flight in the…

Great information, terrible news for T-38 Studs. Hopefully this will clear quickly. I can’t imagine this will help the retention issues. I can see many leaving immediately to go the airlines once the 10-year commitment is up.

Super helpful info. I just finished up IP upgrade at Altus about 2 months ago and we had about 5-6 T-6 only bubbas going through initial qual sims while I was there. The general consensus was they had been screwed over by the syllabus design and were struggling to make it through initial qual.
